Giant caveat: I have no idea what I am talking about and I may be totally wrong and I reserve the right to completely change my mind.
But what I do perceive is this. Google says it is spending $900 million in buying Nortel patents out of bankruptcy as a shield to protect itself from patent suits. The fact that Google needs to do this cannot be good for a startup trying to innovate in smartphones or other areas of technology that are the targets of patent suits, as I am virtually certain that startups don’t have this type of money (or even much less) to protect themselves.
I am certain I need to think of this issue in a deeper way and there are nuances, but it is super, super disturbing.
